Announcing the 2009 Workshop Schedule
Digital Fall Color on the North Shore
October 2-5, 2008
"Digital Fall Color on the North Shore" Photographic Workshop has 3 openings left!

Call (218) 834-0756 to register.

Places To Go:
As fall rapidly approaches you will want to plan your fall color outings soon. Waterfall with fall color

Along the North Shore of Lake Superior you can't beat the Lutsen area for fall color:

Oberg Mountain has a great trail up to the top, with views overlooking the lake and highlands. The walk to the top is about a mile, and the circle trail at the top is about another mile.

The Fall Color Auto tours on County Road 2 (Sawbill Trail,) or County Road 4 (Caribou Trail.) Look for the map-boxes on the side of the road when you first turn off Hwy 61. These maps will guide through the back-roads to areas of wonderful color and beauty.  Check out Honeymoon Trail.

Fall Color on the North Shore can peak as early as mid-September and as late as mid-October. Typically the maples, beech, and birch inland peak a week or two earlier than the aspen and birch right along the shores of Lake Superior.

Isle Royale Sunrise As the summer winds down I can reflect on the great opportunities I've had for photography over the past couple of months  including trips to the Apostle Islands and Isle Royale. The more I explore and photograph Lake Superior the more I realize the vastness and diversity of this lake. The process of compiling our exhibit, "The Thing About Lake Superior" with photography by Val Doherty and I, as well as factual information and literary quotes about the lake, has educated me that despite Lake Superior's size the lake and lake basin is a very fragile ecosystem. As our country's water resources become taxed from overuse and misuse, water rights that were once only of concern in the arid regions of the American Southwest will become front page news with regularity, even in the land of 10,000 lakes. This summer was marked by the historic event of all eight Great Lakes Governors signing the "Great Lakes Water Compacts" a legal agreement for the protection of the waters in the Great Lakes Basin. Trust me, we have not heard the last of these issues. If you want to learn more about the Great Lakes ecosystem and how water rights and the implementation of water diversions has played a part in the natural and social history of the Great Lakes Basin, I recommend reading, "The Great Lakes Water Wars" by Peter Annin, published by Island Press. This book is available at Waterfront Gallery or check with your local bookstore. It is worth the time to read.

Sincerely,
John Gregor

We are also pleased to announce an all new workshop: Teddy Roosevelt Roadtrip!

Experience the Wild West as it once was! This workshop offers the beauty of the rugged North Dakota Badlands coupled with the diversity of wildlife only found on the American Western Prairie. The Theodore Roosevelt National Park and surrounding area is home to: bison, elk, pronghorn, mule deer, bighorn sheep, wild horses, prairie dogs, coyotes, bobcat, and more. We have scheduled this workshop for optimal color in this prairie setting. Find out why Teddy Roosevelt came back to North Dakota year after year; in fact he said that his experiences in North Dakota allowed him to become President of the US.

Our workshop begins in Williston North Dakota, near the North Unit of the Park. Once you get to Williston we take care of almost everything; transportation, accommodations, meals, and guided tours. During morning and evening photography tours we will search out bison, elk, prairie dogs, mule deer, wild horses and whatever else we can find. Set against the colorful hills of the Little Missouri River Valley you are sure to come away with some of the most breath-taking images of your lifetime.
